Save the data that's important first as there is no upgrade from xp to win7, just from vista to win 7. Microsoft provides and Easy transfer wizard to help copy stuff over, I'll post the link as there are different wizards to use depending on 32bit, 64 bit etc, but it tell what each is for. I recommend 64bit win 7, but you have not listed your system specs.

First, back up valuable data externally. Then MS has an upgrade advisor which tells you if your hardware is up to Win7 requirements. How you do the Win7 install depends on what you want to do with the old XP install.

Yes, Last one first. Run upgrade adviser, IF OK, the back up and install, BUT since you have had an infection problem, use Custom, Format/Partition, and delete the original partition that held XP and recreate a new partition(s) and do a full format (overwrites all memory locations), this may take an hour or two depending on the size of your drive and the speed of your system. Then update your drivers from the system manufacturer's website (download ahead of time to a flash drive), update your Windows installation, install a good antivirus program, and then scan your files back up before you reload them.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
