I/O error on Windows 7

Just this morning, when attaching a HP printer to my laptop, the laptop just froze completely. Growing tired of waiting, I just switched it off, but when I turned the laptop on again, all I got was a message telling me I had an I/O error, specifically '0xc00000e9'. This is apparently caused due to problems connecting a device to a computer, but it seems a bit much to assume all this hassle is due to a printer that works fine on other laptops, so I'll assume the problem really lies elsewhere (the error message mentions hard drive problems etc, though the laptop has only been in use for 2 weeks!). My problem is I can't run Safe Mode, the 'repair' options or anything else after running the options you get when pressing F8. No matter what I do, it just goes back to that error message. Anyone have any advice? As previously mentioned, the laptops only been in use a few weeks, I'm quite pissed off the damn things broken so suddenly!
