unable to boot system, how can I get pc into safe mode?

Specs: Windows 7
machine will not boot after completing a hard disk scan, keeps going to CHKDSK and failing. Unable to get pc into safe mode to attempt an alternative start. Diagnostics run OK and I have managed to complete a backup to an external hard drive.

Sounds as if the drive is going bad. If you have a backup of your data, I'd recommend just buying a new HDD and installing your OS on it.

Did you try tapping F8 during boot up to get into advanced boot options? If you can, choose either Start Up Repair or Last Good Configuration. If neither works then boot to a CD with Seatools from Seagate burned to it (ISO image of DOS version that will be bootable) and run the short hard drive test to see if the drive is in usable condition. If the drive reports good from Seatools the post that back and there are a few more things you can do to recover your OS installation and/or boot manager.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
