Good.

Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box & click msconfig to open the System Configuration dialog box.

Go to the Startup tab & click the disable all button to turn off all programs that run every time Windows starts, this way, if something is preventing your machine from loading you can isolate it by a process of elimination.

Click Apply & OK & reboot normally. If you are able to get to your desktop successfully, let us know.

I don't think you've lost any files ... as of yet

How about this: Power OFF the machine completely, do not just restart it. When you login again see if you are able to login to your standard profile.

"Any way of recovering the files that are gone??"

You can download and boot to a live cd such as mint 8 or such. Boot to the cd and copy any files you wish off to an external drive. Should be mostly like using windows to do. Just copy and paste don't cut and past.

Then while you are there see if your original user's are under the users folder.
