Did you try the method outlined in the page linked below?:

I believe F12 is used instead of F8 for Windows 7.

I assume you're aware that a Recovery will erase ALL your data? Make sure you back everything up 1st.

Normally you hold down the zero key and power on the machine and recovery options screen pops up allowing you to do the "factory restore", so when you say it won't work, does that mean you tried it and it didn't finish, or? If the recovery partition doesn't work it is generally because 1-the machine doesn't have one, or has one but it is corrupted
2-The hard drive is damaged and recovery cannot finish.

I would test the hard drive to make sure it was good before I order the disks. You can download Seatools for Dos (for cd), make a bootable cd from the ISO download, F12 to get boot options, boot to the seatools cd, it begins to load up. You then perform a quick generic test, if it passes then run the extended generic test. If it fails either you need a hard drive. Seatools for Windows is for when windows is working and loads up and you can test it that way, the dos version is for your situation where we want to run it off a cd....because windows doesn't load. 4yrs is a good time to check it out.
