Uninstall AVG completely and install something better like Microsoft Security Essentials:

Googling is quicker than waiting for an answer....

You may have remnants of other antivirus programs that were left behind creating a problem. If you originally have McAfee or Norton, go to their website and download their uninstaller to remove these traces. Then see if AVG has something similar. Avast and MS Security Essentials are available free and are considered better than most out there, especially many costing a lot of money. I also like Webroot's product but that is only a free trial.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
