I installed Windows 7 from scratch on 3 systems this week & have encountered the same problem on all of them. After Windows Update installs the new Update Agent (version 7.6.7600.320) & Windows Update is run again afterwards, it will run for what seems like an eternity without doing anything. To fix the problem, manually download & install update KB3102810. Once this update is installed & the system is restarted, Windows Update should function normally again.
Much easier fix - - just turn off Windows Automatic Updates. Install a top-notch antivirus/firewall and you will be quite safe.
I have always turned off automatic updates on Windows XP, Vista & Win7 on all computers that I have and on all computers that friends have asked me to set up for them in the past 15-20 years.
Never had any virus infections or hacking attacks, none.
You only need to visit the Windows Update portal when there is some Microsoft software you need to download.

I believe in letting MS plug their own holes. I have my own systems set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", but on the systems I work on, I run Windows Update manually until all the updates are current & then leave the setting at "Install updates automatically (recommended)".
"I installed Windows 7 from scratch on 3 systems this week" I use this.

Set automatic update search to "Never check for updates" and restart.
Download and install KB3145739 manually

Try automatic updates again again.
