The windows 7 search is extremely frustrating

Specs: Windows 7
Windows 7 search User Experience design is pathetic. The use-case design behind the search function is arcane. Just trying to do a simple date-range search for file creation is proving to be a real hassle. The old search parameters in XP were very clear and intuitive. I am not an inexperienced user, and I am sure there IS a way to do these searches... but it is clearly not obvious. You have to know how to do it before you can do it. You have to have read about it somewhere, or have been shown how do it. This is design arrogance at it's worst. They'll be someone with a clever answer about me not having read an instruction or just windows-bashing, but the fact remains that MANY people are struggling with this search mechanism. For example, when I select date modified (it only offers that and 'size' ...duh) do I not get a 'range option of 'from' and 'to'? HOw do I get to the other search otpions when the 'Add a Search Filter' only offers Date Modified and Size. It is truly bizarre how this can get into production like this.
Sorry about the title typo... can't edit it!

Well, for a date range just drag it out. If it's too big for that click on the start date and shift-click on the end date. Do it once and the syntax to use is obvious.

As for more complicated searches (and the facilities offered by advanced search in Windows 7 are very sophisticated) you only need to remeber one word - Google. It took me about 20 seconds to find the answer to your question using Google.

Thanks. I did search and read the Windows googled result. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/... which you'd think would have the definitive answer... but it is the same as the help answer and doesn't tell you about the range. .... Yes... I can see that the search range functionality does make sense now (its rather good)... but as I said... you have to know about it before you can use it. I'm sure that there could be 'helpers' to make it clear that the date can be dragged. I dont like the restriction of the search parameters based on folder either. Upgrading to 7 has caused me more problems than it has provided advantages. Lots of 'clever' little tricks that are buried, where once they used to be pretty obvious (office suite is a jungle now, too). But I do appreciate you taking the time to set this old guy straight. Cheers.

Advanced Query Syntax
Using Advanced Query Syntax Programmatically (Directed towards a different audience, but mentions the operators added with Win7)
There doesn't seem to be any official definitive help for non-programmers, and that's a shame.

Either start the search from "Computer," or select Computer under the "Search again in" header at the end of the search results.
