Specs: Windows 7
I will be using my computer when suddenly something takes over the cpu comletely and I no longer can use the computer. This happens suddenly and without warning. I've tried ctrl-up-esc to see what is using the resources but cannot interrupt activate that untill the cpu is done.

You either have an infection or you inadvertently are part of a global supercomputing project, there are universities and agencies that run these projects and sometimes when you download something free (without reading the fine print) you become part of one of these projects and they can use your CPU down time to run calculations. These are not supposed to be intrusive, but if it begins just before you need the system resources, it can be a problem. Restart in Safe mode with networking and run Malwarebytes to double check for an infection that may have slipped past your antivirus program. Then open msconfig and go to the start tab, uncheck anything not Microsoft or your antivirus program and write down anything you cannot identify immediately so you can Google for it later. Then restart your system and nothing else should be able to start up. Then identify those you do not know. If you find something in a program you did not install and did not come with your PC, you can uninstall it under Control Panel>Programs.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
