A few questions: do you have the recovery disks? If not, are you the original owner of the laptop? If the disks have never been created & you're able to boot to Windows, you can still create the disks...DVDs are recommended rather than using a USB jumpdrive. What is wrong that you feel a restore is necessary?

yes I have recovery discs, the first few were empty for some reason, but think I have them now...will recheck, thank you. I am the original owner and my husband's VAIO, different model, without backup, was/is fried though he won't go through the chore of re-trying to get it up again and I don't have the time right now... so I'm a tad paranoid that something could happen. What triggered this is that I always used IE 11 and then I started getting page won't load messages, which seemed to have lost my Norton Vault etc. Tried all the corrections from that issue (Microsoft community) Now it's partially working but am primarily using Chrome...whose password manager is a pain if you have different logins for same site, like google mail or even the grocery store. Sorry to go on and on...But any help is appreciated!
