If you put shortcuts on the external hard drive, especially if they are from another computer, then that is about right. what you really need to use an external drive for is to save or transport copies of the actual files.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

there is no way a shortcut file will open if the actual file was not there and has the same location target as the shortcut.
U want to open the shortcut make sure the original files are there and then create a new shortcut for whichever one u are opening
