Scanned prints come up 'black' - why can't I see the scanned

Acer / Aspire e1-570

Specs: Windows 8, intel core i3 4GB DDR3 memory
I had this software on my previous PC, now I am using Windows 8. Everything seems to have downloaded OK, but when it came to "Calibrate", nothing happened. Should I see or hear something? The instruction manual seems to miss a couple of steps.

Do you have the option to set the type of scanned document to Auto-Detect Color Mode (or something similar?)

What are you scanning a document, photo (color or black and white?)

Are you sure you are placing the original in the scanner correctly? Flatbed face down, sheet fed usually face up.
