If a webcam has a built-in mic, then the mic starts when the webcam starts. To start a webcam from the Run window, you should set the webcam software folder to be in the global (system) variables section. After that, whenever you type in the name of the webcam program, the webcam and mic start together.

If mic is not built-in on the webcam, then you select the mic to be used in the webcam software. In this case, the mic also starts when webcam starts.

Ex: Windows messenger, Skype, etc. In the settings section of these programs, you tell the programs to use this webcam or that webcam, if you have more than one webcam, and this mic or that mic, if you have more than one mic. Then when you start the program, the selected webcam and the selected mic start to work.

Type in a name in Variable Name field ( ex: my cam )
Type in the path of your webcam software in the Varaible Value field ( ex: C:\Program Files (x86)\Cam Software\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\Cam Software\webcam.exe ) Please note "Cam Software" folder title and webcam.exe executable name change acc. to your software installation. You can use the mic independently and when you start the webcam. If you use Windows messenger or Skype, you can turn the video off, I guess or you make a call without video.

For the mic, open Control Panel, Devices and Sound, Sound.

Click Record tab, you will see your mic there, whether standalone or built-in on the webcam.
