Most, but not all, 64 bit applications install and run without problem on 64 bit Windows 7. You don't have to do anything special to do the install. Many novice users do this without even being aware they have a 64 bit OS.

If you are having a problem you need to describe it in detail.
This includes what is the application, what OS it was designed for, and any error messages received.

I'd go even farther and say all 32 bit applications should run in Windows 7 either in native mode or in compatibility mode. The problem is with some parts of the installer usually that are not fully 32 bit. Some files that were in some older distro's may need to be added or some of the older settings changed. It is still possible that some very few apps will not run under any force. In that case you can consider a virtual machine or a dual boot with 32 bit windows 7.

The problem with running Windows XP on a VM hosted by Windows 7 is that the computer is going to need Windows XP compatible drivers. On a computer running Windows 7 that is likely to prove difficult if not impossible.
