restoring xp backup file to windows 7

Specs: Windows 7
My computer crashed so I bought a new one. The old one had window xp home and the new one is running on windows 7. I did have all my files backed up onto an external hard drive. The file has a BFK or BKF extension which research says is from the xp backup utility program. I tried to download the backup program from Microsoft but it says I'm running the wrong operating system even though their documentation says it's specifcally for the xp to 7 program. I have the original xp home disk and tried to install just the backup program only to read the small print that xp home doesn't support recovery of the file...you can only create it.

I even tried to run one of those pay $90 for the software programs to see the files but it gave me an error message, probabably because the file is quite large. So how do I restore the files/documents from my backup file? Still had the program disks so they weren't lost (except one). Any idea?

There's a tool from M$ to restore .BKF files using NTBackup in Windows 7.
