Restore Point Cannot Be Created

Specs: Windows XP 32-bit
System Restore error message: The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and
Application event logs for more information. (0x80042306)

In the Event Viewer error messages:

Volume Shadow Copy Service initialization error: the control dispatcher
cannot be started [0x80070427, The service process could not connect to the service controller.].

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy4
00000140,0x00560034,00D33EC8,0,00D32EC0,4096,[0]).hr = 0x8007045d, The request could not be performed because
of an I/O device error.

These are the steps that I took:

Step 1. I set the disk space to 20GB to 30GB in the Restore Settings.

Step 2. In Service Console, right-click Volume Shadow Copy (VSS), select properties, set the startup type
to "manual", click "Start", and select "Apply".

However, the same error message appears when I try to recreate another restore point, and the VSC was
turn off after an error occur.

Step 3. I also started the SSP Notification Service in the Service Console after I did a further research on
the error messages and turn VSS back on again.

Step 4. I verified that the VVS is avialable by typing "net start vss" in the command prompt running as an
administrator. I viewed the text message to verify that is already started.

You show XP but this is the Windows 7 forum? Please clarify.
If there are ANY old restore points you can try to restore to and see if that works. If not then it may be easier to back up manually your files (copy/paste) to external device and do a full factory restore or a reinstall from scratch.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
