Red cross sign on the battery symbol of my DELL VOSTRO 2420

Specs: Windows 7, 2.20GHZ/2GB
Everything was perfect till yesterday. Yesterday when I open my laptop then also nothing was serious. When the battery power level got down below 13% I saw an symbol for low battery indication and when it reached to the 7% it showed me a window to plug in but I forgot. So as in the as usual manner the screen became dark. Then I plugged in my laptop and resumed to my old screen. But from then a white cross sign surrounded by a red solid circle started to appear on the battery symbol. To remove it I already have removed the battery and then reconnected , plugged out and plugged in the laptop for two to three times. But all my tries has gone in vain. It is working properly still now but what I should do now???

Very likely the battery has reached the end of it's life and needs replacing because after a few years the battery can't hold a charge anymore (they can only be be charged up so many times before they die).

My laptop has a red cross over the battery icon, and If I click on it, it tells me that the battery needs replacing. I just ignore it because I don't need a battery, my laptop is always at home, I never use it when travelling.
