Specs: Windows 7 / XP, AMD II X2 250 / 4 GB
My last XP computer died and I would like to recover some data from the hard drive - is it possible to do this within a computer running windows 7? Both HDs are Western Digital and use SATA. Thank you!

Provided the drive is operating and the files are not encrypted there should be no problem doing this. You may have to take ownership of some folders.

✔ Best Answer
Remove hard drive from XP system and install in the Win 7 system or in external USB drive enclosure.

Thanks for the replies - that was almost too easy - just plugged it in and was able to access the drive - I just assumed it would be more complex and I didn't want to mess up my win 7 system. Thanks again!

Messing up may mean a virus issue. Any malware on the xp disk can be transferred. Be sure to have a good security suite on the Windows 7.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
