Programs are not responding

I am having a problem with programs that I open. This happens constantly and consistently with Firefox (v 8.0) and was a problem with my installation of the previous version. When I open the program it goes into not responding mode, the screen turns white and it eventually responds. Whenever I go to type anything in Firefox it does the same, or when I click a new tab or switch between tabs. It almost always eventually responds, but occasionally crashes. It takes forever to perform simple tasks. The same happens with Sony Vegas Pro 9. Anytime I click to perform a new task within the program it goes into not responding mode, the screen goes white, then it eventually responds. It also happens with VLC media player. So it is not just with one program, but system wide with my computer. I'm running Win 7 on an i3 machine with 6gb RAM. The computer is only a couple of months old and of course this didn't happen when I initially loaded all my programs. It's been happening for about a month and getting worse. I'm not sure where to begin looking to fix the problem. Any clues? Thanks for your consideration.

You said the problem is getting worse.. so its been gradually building up for a while?

This sounds like it might be a case of a cluttered machine.. start the disc cleanup if you haven't already and let me know how much it deletes. You can find disc clean up in Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disc Cleanup
