Problems Installing Windows 7

Microsoft Windows 7 ultimate - upgrade
June 30, 2010 at 18:07:21
Specs: Windows Vista
I purchased the ISO for Windows 7 Ultimate,
and used PowerISO to mount the ISO onto my
CD Drive then I copied the files to my Western
Digital 320 GB external hard drive. I did all of
the prior requirements that were needed such
as making sure the boot code was correct I
used the following in command prompt under
administrator: bootsect.exe /nt60 /fixmbr. I
then proceeded to change the boot order for
the external hard drive to boot first and put my
current hard drive that is installed booting last
in order not to confuse the BIOS. Yet when I
restart my computer all that I get is a small
blinking underscore, and it will not proceed
any further. I know that I could burn the ISO to
a DVD-R or put it on a Flash Drive, but I don't
have any money currently. Can anyone help
me proceed past this point please?

Since Vista, some iso mounting programs don't work with
Windows, so maybe PowerISO is one of them. I know
MagicISO works so maybe it would be worth trying that.
However, you're simplest solution is to spend a few pence and
burn it to DVD.

y0u say you copied the files to the hard drive, do you mean you ran the installation of win 7 from iso in the virtual dvd, or that you just copied the files? to run a setup from the external drive?
you should drop the iso into the virtual drive and run setup, the rest will happen automatically, just hit the advanced button so you choose which drive to install on, and set drive sizes.

win7 will install its boot sector on the drive that is set as the boot drive, this will also give you an automatic dual boot system, win7 or old windows. just in case ;-)
remember to create a backup image once your system is fully setup and a repair cd.

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....
