problems creating shortcuts on desktop

Specs: WIndows 7, 2x2.2Ghz - 4GB
Whenever I right click the desktop and go to New > Shortcut, the icon it creates has the "hidden" attribute. If its a shortcut to an app it will work, although hidden since I have hidden files shown. But if its a shortcut to a url it gives me an error: "unable to create shortcut". I think its related to the fact that its hidden because when I hit cancel, another dialog comes up and says the shortcut could no longer be found, please verify the file's location. when I hit cancel on that I'm back at the desktop and the shortcut is there, hidden, and does not work.

I have tried on three PCs. 2 have the problem, one doesn't. Two run IE 8 one runs IE 9 and firefox.

The correct way is to navigate to the program or link icon and right click on that one, then select 'Send to'>'Desktop as a Shortcut'. That is all you need, no matter where on you system the original icon is (if the icon is already on the desktop then you will get a new one with name plus '(1)' after it) and it will say 'Shortcut to.....' which if you like you can edit out of the name after.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

That doesn't solve the problem of creating shortcuts to urls. In any event, there is something wrong and I'd like to fix it.

The problem was being caused by the McAfee On-Access Scanner process. Go into the McAfee security suite and turn off on-access scanning and you can create shortcuts just fine. You can then turn the scanner back on.
