I too installed Avast (free) on my Windows 7 box and had no problem whatsoever. Since you uninstalled Avast and it hasn't made a difference I'm inclined to think it might very well be the interface, or something related to it, instead.

First, let's check out your network interface. Open a command prompt window (ie: Start >> Run >> type cmd and hit Enter) and perform the following command:

ipconfig /all

Once you've finished, copy/paste the output into a response on here so we can have a look.

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

I also use Avast on several computers and never had a problem.

You may have had a virus that Avast caught and either quarantined or deleted the file. That file could have been related to your network card drivers or networking within Windows.
