Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device in Windows 7

May 1, 2012 at 09:51:34
Specs: Windows 7
After a year of successful operation, I cannot get a Safe Removal Message for a Seagate Free Agent Go following a notice that the generic device cannot be stopped. Instead, I get a message to unplug the device and upon doing so to troubleshoot. Troubleshooting tells me the device is not properly working and problems with PnP devices. Even when I reboot the same thing happens. The Mass Storage Device Properties box shows it is set to quick removal.
Is this a problem with the Seagate Device or the operating system or both? Would a replacement storage device have the same problem? As of now I can't safely remove.

does the device work properly on another computer ? as far as i can tell this can be a problem with the device itself. can u try another usb device like an HDD or another usb, if the same happens then u have a problem with ur usb root hubs or device manager needs to reinstall the usb drivers

Thanks for your response. I replaced the Seagate Free Agent Go with a Sandisk Cruzer. The Sandisk could also not be ejected. Does this suggest the problem is with the hardware or Windows 7 but not with the Seagate Free Agent Go.
Any other suggestions?

Sounds like something is locking access to the external drives. Does it do this is safe mode? Have you scanned for viruses lately? Try changing the drive letter in your disk manager.

Run checkdisk on it.

Otherwise some program is still trying to access it. Might have to run sysinternals tools to diag what is running on it.

Be sure to put a "FOLDER" called autorun.inf on it. If that complains then see what the "FILE" named autorun.inf says. May be hidden.

Text, talk, drive...CRASH.

Hang up and drive @#$%^^

Also, try to disable the windows protection "windows system restore" on the drive, also disable the recycle bin on the drive. Make sure that your page file is not set to the external some how.
