Photoshop File Error!?

Adobe Photoshop extended cs4 11.0
February 10, 2010 at 10:03:56
Specs: Windows 7
So I was doing an artist research on photoshop and I finished it so when I came to save it was all fine and it saved. So I close photoshop and the next day when I came to open the document up again the icon didn't have a photoshop icon just a normal file icon. And when I double click on the file a screen pops up saying "File Helper - Open Unassociated File." I tried opening the file by opening photoshop and going file > open but when I clicked on the document I got an error message saying "could not complete the request because it is not the right kind of document." So I tried opening the file in internet explorer and it says; MIME Type: application/octet-stream. I don't have a clue what that means and need help.

I spent almost three hours on this artist research and don't want to start it again. It's due in for school soon so I need help fast! I just want to know how to get the file to open in photoshop.

I need help really bad!

The default extension to save with photoshop is .psd. But when I right click on it and go properties on it, it says 'Type of File: File.' And I don't understand why it's not just saved as a .psd.
