Download a different pdf reader. Maybe one of the portableapps.com ones. See if it also fails to read correctly.

i've tried so many things. would you mind suggesting one of the portable apps so that i'm not guessing.

when i try to open the pdf file it says in the dialogue box that the document is word by microsoft , do i want to allow it, i say yes and yet it isn't in english. i am trying to work between a laptop and desktop in order to get things done and i am losing it.

thank you so much for the reply.

I get it now. I suspect that your system has the file associations wrong. Right click on the file that you KNOW is a pdf and use the open with. Select your pdf reader. Or open the pdf reader and then select the file you want. If that works then fix the file association. At bottom of open with is a checkbox to do that.

Just an FYI if jefro's suggestion doesn't work:

"would you mind suggesting one of the portable apps so that i'm not guessing."

Either of these should work:
