overheating and fan not going.

Specs: Windows 7
my laptop has been getting very hot the past few weeks, at some stages, the computer has completely turned off because of the heat.
my fan does not seem to be turning on. but occasionaly when it does, its very very noisey.
does anyone know what could be happening?

I suspect that you have a bad fan and it will have to be replaced.

its not a great deal to change the fan yourself, laptops are a lot easier to take apart and put together than most people realise, it may be that a can of compressed air and a good vacuum will help your situation considerably too.
buy a can from the local computer store $5 for a big can, spray all the vents quite generously you will probably see a lot of dust flying out, vacuum all air vents too then spray and vacuum again.
see how it runs, if that doesnt help you may have toke it apart and change/clean the fan, you can check on youtube for the model and probably get a full strip down video. its quite easy.

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....
