Outlook 2007 email problems in Windows 7

Microsoft Outlook 2007
May 30, 2010 at 07:53:09
Specs: Windows 7
Since leaving Gmail, I am not receiving messages to my Outlook Inbox when Outlook is not running.
When I am logged on with Outlook running mail is received OK with no problems.
Can anyone help me? Please bear in mind that I am not particularly technically minded.

Outlook cannot receive messages unless it is actually running (maximised or minimised).

Thanks for your response.
I accept that Outlook cannot accept messages unless it is running,
What I meant was that Outlook does not pick up any messages that were sent during the time that Outlook was not active.
e.g. Laptop switched off overnight, then I do not receive any messages that were sent, even though I know an email has been sent.

You can only receive messages when your laptop is switched on and you are connected to the Internet. Your email client also needs to be open.

Your ISP receives your mail 24/7 and holds it for you, you get the download when you launch Outlook (depending on your settings, you may need to click the send/receive button). If you want to 'see' that they are arriving when you are not running Outlook, use their 'web mail' feature. They will show you the mail and the time they received it. Mail you download to Outlook will have been deleted, so you will not see the old ones. Try looking just before you open Outlook, if you do not delete them there, you will get them in outlook when you open it later.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
If all else fails, read instructions.

I have now sorted the problem by using a different email address.

Thanks for the response thus far.

As far as I am concerned this issue is now closed.
