If the system is asking if you want to format the memory stick then it means that, as far as your machine is concerned, the data on it is corrupted, that's why you cannot open it by default. Try it in another computer for a start, just in case there's an issue with your laptop. If it still cannot be read then you need to look into data recovery software.
