Do you see any messages? Is the Office legal and not installed elsewhere?

I don't think it will work. Office or just Word has to be installed on the system partition. Will the updates work manually?

As far as i know, its a legal copy. its a white disk that says office professional 2003 at the top, and the install key at the bottom. my brother sent it to me. he is a systems administrator for a large company so they probably buy lots. once uninstalled, it will update. i have since re-installed the entire disk and the updates work. i only use manual updates.

If you perform a custom install you can install ONLY the modules you need. You can also go to Control Panel> programs and features and select MS Office. You should get an option to modify the installation. You can then remove the modules you don't want. I usually perform the custom install and only install Word and Excel because that is all I use.

Sounds like a burned copy. Companies usually don't buy individual licenses for software. Usually buy for x number of users. You should keep up with your brother on that copy. If his company moves to a newer version yours may pop up as not valid. If it is working now, then I wouldn't be too concerned.

I don't use macros so I don't worry much about updating Office.
