num loc won't stay on at logon on HP Laptop

December 4, 2011 at 23:14:00
Specs: Windows 7
[HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard]
"InitialKeyboardIndicators"="2"

The type of InitialKeyboardIndicators is REGSZ

(MINE IS REG DWORD not REG SZ, how do I change this to REG SZ?

I've googled it and found this on a german result page: Switches on/off in registry are usually defined as REG_SZ. A REG_DWORD is a 32bit which can not only be used for on/off but for more possible status.
So I think you have just to set the value "2", the type of the variable cannot be changed and is operating system dependent.

It is set to 2 everywhere I can find where it might remotely affect initial keyboard and unfortunately, we still have to turn the Num Loc on (after restarting laptop), which is a pain because initial login password requires numeric input. Annoying.
Thank you! You got farther than I as I have searched high and low (even HP's website) for a solution. I guess I will call HP.

There is no BIOS Setting for the keyboard. I am going to call HP and then I will come back here and report my findings.

It doesn't usually mention keyboard itself but refers to "number lock".

Anyhow, yes it would be interesting for us to hear what you find out - thx.

Long story short, my HP warranty ended 1 year ago. They want $100 to tell me how to turn the num loc on so, I will live with it as it is. Thanks for your help!

Cripes, they must be doing very nicely. I don't know the answer but I bet it's relatively simple and doesn't warrant a fee like that. Thx for update anyhow and hope you stumble across a fix some time.
