No video during POST after restart

Specs: Windows 7
I have two problems with the screen going black. They appear to be completely
separate, so I'm only asking about the problem which started recently. The other
problem has been going on since I assembled the computer, and is likely due to
a hardware glitch. The new problem is more likely caused by a changed setting.

I installed 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium about 37 days ago, re-partitioning
the drive at the same time. I then added a couple more partitions as I installed
64-bit Ubuntu 10.10, to dual boot via selection in Grub. That was working fine
until a week ago.

I haven't yet registered Windows. When the 30-day limit expired a week ago, I
extended the grace period by 30 days with the command " slmgr -rearm ".

Turning the computer on displays the normal POST, after which I select Ubuntu
or Windows. When I exit either OS with a restart, the screen is black during the
POST. When the POST is finished and Grub starts, the video comes back on.
I can go back and forth between the OS's and the problem continues until I shut
the computer off via the usual software shutdown, and turn it on again with the
power switch. I do not need to shut off power to the motherboard for the video
to start working again.

Don't reboot. Do a full power down. Pull AC plug and press power button a few times then do normal start. Does it work? If always yes then there is some problem with how the system is not fully clearing power and gates. Might be PSU is not dropping low enough but could also be any component with ESD damage.

I did already say that it always works again after a soft power down, so would
it be possible (if your guess is right) for a full power down to produce different
results? I wouldn't think that would give additional info.

Are you guessing that the onset of this behavior at about the same time as
my extension of the grace period was just a coincidence?

Just a controlled test to decide.

try tapping tab during post.

if your concerned that swapping between OS's doesnt show post,is it not that changing os does not shut down the actually computer, so it doesnt actually repost?

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

I haven't done any additional testing yet, but until a week ago, the POST
always took place when I restarted. It still appears to take place, but the
screen is black until Grub starts. The beep and time delay are exactly
the same as during POST.
