No OES on new hard drive

February 22, 2013 at 11:08:52
Specs: WinXP Home - SP2, 2GB
Hi,
Toshiba have provided me with a new hard drive as the old (3 month old) hard drive was corrupt. The new hard drive has no OES. I wasn't given a disc when I purchased the laptop and Toshiba are asking me for £30.00 for A Windows 7 download even though the laptop is still under warranty !!. Is there a way of installing 7 without a disc that wont cost a lot.
I have been looking at Restore,Repair, Recover CD's on ebay for about £5.00. Would these do the job ?

Many thanks

Jon

"The new hard drive has no OES"

Of course not.

"I wasn't given a disc when I purchased the laptop"

All the files & the software to create the disc(s) were on the original HDD. You were supposed to create them when you 1st got the laptop. It's not Toshiba's fault that they were never created.

Probably not, unless you're willing to download & install a pirated copy thru the torrents? Or you can legally download & install Linux for free.

Maybe, maybe not. You need to somehow confirm you'd be buying the proper disc(s) for your system.

Where did you buy the laptop from? If it was still under warranty it's very unusual for Toshiba to just give you a new harddrive without actually installing it and restoring it back to factory conditions, ie with the OS back on it - something seems not right there. Personally I would return it to the point of purchase and get them to liaise with Toshiba to get the system back as it should be.
