no discs being recognized

April 14, 2011 at 17:44:09
Specs: Windows 7
My E drive aka my cd / dvd drive is not recognizing any discs, that includes blanks, store bought artist ones etc. Yes it sees all drives including the new external drive I got. When I boot up PC pops up with a balloon msg saying files waiting to be burned. I have no such request pending. When I try to find them x2 opens to my c drive. No files there I want or should delete. I click on the cd drive and I get a msg that says please put a disc in drive. Btw some of the time there has been either a blank disc in drive or a store bought artist cd. I tried 2 different restore points and each comes up with some msg about something may be corrupted and contact my administrator (me, I guess?). Windows Media Center no longer appears on my pc. I was on the Microsoft site and tried to update it and it says it can't something about software restriction and contact my administrator???? I am not sure if it is related to no disc recognize problem. One more thing the sound is working fine.

I'm not sure if Error Checking applies to your problem but it won't hurt
to run it.

1. Error Checking- CD not needed
Start - my computer - right click local disk (C) - properties - Tools Tab -
Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start -
This requires a restart to begin.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Major renovations going on here at the house and 3 neurotic dogs along with 8 cats freaking out a lot less.
I ran the error check twice and it did not show anything from what I could see and problem still exists the same.

Do a system restore to before you began having the problems.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I have already tried that with 2 different restore points and neither one would complete. The following is a copy of a past post on this thread:

An update on the noted comments about Windows Media Player 12 is that I tried to find a exe for it or even 11. I did find it for 11 but it would not install it said already had a newer version on my pc. I just haven't looked in the right place. I don't know if one issue has any bearing on the other but you never know. I have learned a lot since I have been online since early '98 and I do know it is most definitely an ongoing learning experience.
Thank you

If you have files corrupted and can't find a solution you can reinstall
Windows 7 after you copy your Documents to a DVD.
If your DVD Drive won't work than copy them to your External hard drive.
Your computer should have a location to create the System Recovery Disk
Your allowed to make one copy. Look in All Programs.
If you have and HP I could have given you the location. You didn't say the manufacturer or if your using a desktop.

One thing you can try is - Turn off your computer - Unplug the power supply - Wait 3 minutes before starting your computer up.

I am having trouble with understanding the sequence and reasons for the steps you have given. I have to say I have just had to install Win7 twice due to some interesting steps by the person who tried it the first go around. Each time I installed Win7 I had to reinstall programs and really don't want to do it again. As to copying things to a dvd if discs aren't recognized that won't work. The same thing applies for making recovery discs. By the way I have a compaq desktop.

Go to the Control Panel - Open System Icon - Device Manager (left corner)
Click the pointer in front of - DVD/CD-Rom Drives - Right click the next on the list - Properties - See if this device says it's working properly.
If not upgrade drivers.

I clicked through to the point you suggested and on the tab (labeled general) it lists drives and nothing else. No statement about anything. Update drivers? How do I do that? Yes I am learning some things I know some I don't and am learning!

If you want to remove Windows Media Player 11 and than reinstall it,
your choice.
Start - Control Panel - Programs and Features - Look to see if it's listed.
It's not listed as the name you gave for my HP computer.
