Speakers are the X540 5.1. barely any sound comes from the rears. ran surround, rear surround and center diags (all 3 failed) analog test passed and sound was evenly through all speakers. do i need a slot sound card to get digital sound?

It's because your speakers are analog.

What book -- the speaker manual? Again, the speakers do not come with a 5.1 Dolby Digital decoder & you don't have a sound card. OOC, what motherboard do you have?

In your PM, you state that the Xonar DS was not working for you in Windows 7. The card should work & you should have sound. Are you using the latest 32/64bit (7.12.8.1777) driver or another version?

According to ASUS:

Window 7 does not automatically select Xonar as the default audio device after driver installation. You need to configure the device manually ... see below.

Control Panel → Hardware & Sound → Apply below settings:

Playback → Speaker: select “ASUS Xonar Audio Device”
Recording → Microphone: select “ASUS Xonar Audio Device”

Post back if needed.
