Solved no desktop in safe mode after system restore

January 20, 2012 at 07:48:43
Specs: Windows 7 Prem. 64bit
Help needed. Hi, i started pc and got a blank desktop, just wallpaper, no icons or taskbar. Booted to safe mode, icons and taskbar appear. Tried replacing explorer.exe, as directed from google search, that responds with "no rights...something, something" (can't remember rest). Ran mbam in safe mode and I removed a trojan named "explorer...something, something (can't remember rest)." Normal reboot and still nothing. Did a system restore in safe mode, now no icons, taskbar or wallpaper, just a black screen with mouse. no ctrl/alt/delete. Booted to safe mode and thats blank now too. List of events as best as I remember, please help.

It sounds like you got a trojan that hid all of your stuff.. you'd be amazed how often this happens.

If your getting all this stuff in safe mode, I hate to say it, but you might as well reformat and start over.

If you want to grab data that is not infected off your hard drive, you can take it to someone that knows how to slave a hard drive and grab the data that way. But my best advice for you from this point is to start over.

✔ Best Answer
The symptoms indicate you have a virus infected system. There are some that hide all the desktop icons and hide the start menu. Cleaning is needed to remove the infection and then a utility that restores the hidden icons and programs. I have a process where I remove the viruses on the systems and then run a utility called unhide. It is a free download you can search for. First make sure the infections are removed so it can work correctly.

Thanks you for replying. I just finished running mbam and avast on that drive in another pc I have. Avast found 1 trojan which had been a file in a folder on my desktop for a while. So I don't know why it would wait this long to do something? I am going to try and run a scan on it from an online scanner and see what it finds. I really don't want to reformat. I use that pc for school and I have a couple of programs on there I use (Kurzweil 3000 and Dragon Naturally Speaking), that I have to call someone in to install and tweak on, for them to be work right tpgether. Oh well we'll see what happens. It kind of ironic because that's the pc with mbam that I just upgraded to pro version a day before this all happened. I do have 2 pc's. I'll report back with results.

Unfortunately somewhere in the process I deleted the explorer.exe file, so I'm transferring files and will be reformatting. :( On the plus side, I learned a valuable lesson. Thanks guy's.
