No boot-up when turning on my laptop

July 9, 2014 at 15:05:17
Specs: Windows 7, AMD V-140/2GB
When turning on the laptop (emachines E442-V140) nothing happens, just some noise from Hard Drive I guess, the CPU led won`t start flashing, just black screen, processor seems dead, won`t start. The power and battery leds are on, it gets power.
Thanks for the tips in advance!

pinus described the same problem:
"Emachine E442-V634 doesn't boot up anymore. Power button lights up, dvd player opens and close fine, screen remains black, no beeps of any kind, cpu fan on. It was working fine and a few night ago shut the computer down for the night. Turned it on the next morning and this situation happened. After a few attempts it started and worked fine, made a backup of anything important , just in case. That evening went to turn on the computer and same thing happened and was never able to restart it again. Screen remains black and won't even boot to the bios. Harddrive seems to be "clicking" when I try to boot up. Tried draining the power by holding the power button down without any power going to the computer. Removed ram and reboot, no beeps. Tried one ram modul at a time, no results. Boot with hard drive removed, no beeps or bios. Took the computer apart , no dust on fan. Computer is only two years old. Tried hooking it up to another monitor, still nothing. I am at a lost to what the problem might be. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I don t think it is the hard drive since the bios screen won t even come up. Western Digital 320 GB, AMD V140, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. How do you find a solution to this problem."

Tricky because a number of different hardware faults can produce this symptom.

Best check all internal connections but a hard drive clicking is often a sign that the HD itself failing.

A PSU can be faulty even when the power lights come on.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Just wondering why the post says solved when it isn't?

Re #6

Probably because the forum sent an auto email asking for a best answer to be selected.

I think it can still be removed so that other helpers might join in :-)

Re #9
Maybe there's a way to do it without starting the reminders again (which the poster might not want). As this aspect is of interest, perhaps you could have a word with Justin.

I can't speak for everyone but I don't think many helpers skip over posts showing "solved" because this is mainly to help others googling in.

Re #11

Best Answer was given to #2 at the time because it was the only answer that addressed the question.

Good to see that you have answered your new question #9, although it is still unclear whether removing Best Answer will ultimately cause another request to be automatically sent to the poster.

I am calling a halt on our asides because response #5 implies that the poster wishes to put the original question on the back burner and I doubt he is appreciating the flurry of emails saying there are "new answers" when they are all off topic. You can always pursue it further with Justin or in the Lounge if you so wish.

Thanks.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't notice it is a laptop.E-machines have been notorious with their power supplies in the past. That may be the problem. If you had a spare PS to try....it would help toward solving the problem....
I would then suggest a new AC adapter....either that, OR the Battery may be on it's way out. Both are quite inexpensive on ebay, but I see you are on the water at this time.

Guys sorry about the confusion caused by the "Best Answer" issue. Anyways, I did manage to switch it on again, and it did last for half a day, switched off again...probably because of the daily momentarily power shortage on the ship...I've been and am working on a river cruise ship for another two weeks so therefore no chance to have it fixed. Trying to get some D.I.Y. help from colleagues too, but no use. So it's strange now, that it turned on after app. 20 attempts. Any suggestions are welcome.
