If you have no hard disk, you can use an OS, such as Linux, that works right off a bootable CD-ROM.

Get such an bootable Linux CD disk and boot to it. You can do anything with it and save your work to a removable media.

if the hdd came with the computer and its a brand you may have a hidden partition with the os ready to install, otherwise you use linux boot, install linux or buy a windows OS..
HP supply a recovery partition which can be accessed by repeatedly pressing F10 at startup

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....
