This is a new issue for me. Client has desktop system that often clicking an icon or right clicking anywhere does nothing on the desktop. We can access the start menu and task bar. Many times this is after opening a window or two. We go back to the desktop to access a shortcut and nothing works except the task bar. Right or left clicking an icon does nothing and right clicking open space does nothing.

So far the only recovery I have found is to reboot. This can happen at the first cold boot of the day, after the system has been on for hours idle or not, after just a few minutes. I don't see a pattern. There isn't a single program we are accessing that causes this that we can see. There are no strange programs on this computer all pretty routine stuff. I have run malwarebytes and his virus scanner and found nothing. Have also ran CCleaner.

What I find through google doesn't seem to match what I have here. Any advice at this point would be greatly appreciated.

Try a system restore point to before the problem, see if that works.

Is the wallpaper set to slide show? It could be some background program isn't playing nice with the new Win7 features.

See event logs.

Since the keyboard works, why not replace the mouse?

@ XpUser4Real Unclear as to when the issue actually started. Client says he thinks around a month.

@ Razor2.3 The wallpaper was set to slideshow. I've turned that off. Been a few hours and nothing yet. May be on to something.

@ jefro Not much in event logs except a couple programs stoping and starting again. Client brought me his tower. I am using different keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

Might replace the hard drive and install any generic xp disk on it. No need to activate it just use it to test the mouse.

Maybe a bartspe disk might replicate it. A linux disk is not a good test but could be used.

I might be mistaken, jefro, but from the OP, I think only the Desktop window isn't responding to input. When desktop clicking isn't working, everything else is. He can minimize solitaire, try to click on the desktop, notice it doesn't work, say to himself, "that sucks," and can go back to playing solitaire.

Ezactly Razor2.3. He can use the start menu it's just the desktop (with the backround) where there is no response. It hasn't happened again since I turned off the backround slideshow. My bet is it doesn't play well with something. He'll be picking it up in a bit.
