Of course there are loads of updates - this is Microsoft you're
talking about!!. After you've installed your security suite then
going to Control Panel/updates will get you up to date,
eventually.

The first thing should be to create a restore DVD if you are not given one.

Happy new year.

Make and use always a limited user account instead of the admin account.

Hopefully you enabled firewall features before you connected it to the internet. Consider microsoft's security essentials.and all other updates downloads.

I agree on the see how to restore your system. If you have to make disks now is the time. Might make two copies just in case.

I'd ghost the disk in case it failed.

You didn't say what kind of factory PC is this. Be aware that each OEM add their own crapware to every computer they sell. They also get paid by third party vendors to add their own junkwares too. Go HERE to find out what your particular OEM have quietly added to the machine you took home. You can also learn to master the more popular tool known as Decrapifier that is explained HERE.

Good luck and have fun.

No

Monitor is Plug and Play friendly, using Windows drivers
And speakers just plug straight in
