Solved need help with laptop failure

Specs: windows 7
p2pp burnboot check failed thats the message I keep getting affter I use the recovery disks I got from hp its not the hard drive so I tried going to bios and changing the year to 2012 but that didnt work my laptops is a HP Pavilion dv7-4263cl 64 bit windows 7. what can I do to get windows back everytime I finish with my recovery disks I get a message that says recovery has failed and thats the p2pp message I get ps I cant use safe mode because all I get is a black screen with no command prompt

You have already tried changing year to 2012 without success, but you must do that and load BIOS defaults, then save and exit BIOS Setup.

Now use the factory recovery discs again.

Looks like you've been to the HP forums and without resolution.
Might be worth another try. Before taking more more drastic action.

Maybe wait until someone else comes along with more specific advice, otherwise think about obtaining a proper Win7 install disc and install Windows without having to put up with all the manufacturers crappy add-on programmes and trialware.

Chances are W7 will install the basic drivers you need to get online. Go to the HP support site for further drivers if need be. If not, use another PC to download your ethernet and/or wireless drivers. It's straightforward from there.
Register WIndows with the existing product key on the hologram label on your laptop (hopefully it's legible), or run Magical Jellybean, or maybe even Speccy and note down the prod key. (do this anyway to ensure the correct 25-digit key is shown).

I haven't used manufacturer's restore options for years. Factory restore just dumps a load of useless software and trialware-crap on your PC.

eg. Had a problem just this week with an Asus laptop, just out of guarantee. Needed a new HDD. The restore partition went West, with the knackered HDD.
Used my Win7 Home Premium 64-bit install disc, registered with the Acer prod key. downloaded drivers I needed from Asus. No crap. Runs better than it ever did.

It's worth considering as an option.
(remember. It sometimes happens, you may need another PC to download basic drivers to get the new Win installation online)

You can ignore the eicfg and USB boot if you can download the correct ISO and burn it to a disc.
Windows 7 and 8 will burn an ISO without the need for further software (r-click the ISO; Burn to Disk)

A wee cautionary note re' using the current windows key - which is likely on the base of the laptop?

Most kit which arrives with the OS etc. already installed is an OEM installation. Often the key/sticker on the base will include OEM in its string of numbers. Occasionally it doesn't - but if one digs out the key information (as suggested above using Magic Jellybean or Belarc Advisor etc.) one will see that the actual key does include OEM letters… However that requires the system to be running - at least in safe-mode.. Which is why it's often a good idea to have all those "key details" copied/stored elsewhere; both as hard-copy (printed) and as a file - "off" the system entirely.

So any disk you may use to install win-7 afresh - not using the recovery discs from HP (they make sauce don't they…?) will have to be an OEM; if you want to use the key you already have. Otherwise it won't work/register with M$.

If you don't/can't use the OEM key you have, then you have to secure a full retail version.

Win-7 retail and OEM disks are around on eBay. Amazon etc., clearance houses and computer fairs. And can also be downloaded (legally) as an ISO from a site on the web. That site is apparently an authorised M$ reseller… It may be worth trying a download ISO of an OEM; and then seeing if your key will work it it.

There was a reference to that site in a recent post here; and if I can recall it, I will post it here - or point you to the post and the site…

Much inclined to agree with Peet100 re' doing a really clean basic rebuild - not using all the stuff that is included with a standard restore/recovery routine…; having rebuilt an elderly Acer 1692 series with an unbranded/unbadged OEM XP-Pro - and using a new key on this occasion… That Acer runs smoother and better overall than with all the extras "stuff" that it came with; and was seldom - if ever - applied/used...

Use the Recovery Partition rather than the Recovery Disks. Here's the instructions from the HP website:

1. Turn off the computer.

2. Disconnect all connected devices and cables such as Personal Media Drives, USB drives, printers, and faxes. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cord.

3. Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second, until Recovery Manager opens.

4. Under I need help immediately, click System Recovery.

5. When System Recovery prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:

** If you have already backed up personal files or you do not want to back up personal files, select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next. Continue to the next step.

6. Click OK in the warning that appears.

7. After the system recovery is complete, click Finish to restart the computer. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup.

8. Once the setup is complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.

9. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer. Reinstall any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.

10. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

Thanks everyone for the help a couple of things though. I dont think I have a recovery partion since I swapped out the hard drive I couldn't get recovery to even start on my old hard drive I had so I swapped it out and also is an oem disk different than the regular recovery disk I got.

I have another working pc but its a windows xp can I still use that pc and burn a copy of windows 7 or is it too old to . As far as burning it to a cd I was gonna use my phones sd card and use it as a usb can I do that or should I just go the dvd route? Thanks alot to everyones help and suggestions

A recovery disk is specific to the computer with which it came; or others of the same make and series. Recovery disks will not work (usually these days) with any other computer. It is not an actual "normal" installation disk… OEM and retail are bootable and are just the OS - no other apps/utilities (usually).

An unbadged OEM (not usually provided with a typical system these days) is similar (almost identical) to a "normal" retail disk; but there is no support from M$; you have to go the vendor for of the disk for support.

Any computer can download and burn an ISO of an OS (whichever it be) to a DVD.

Also seriously consider trying riider's options/suggestions too?

I tried riiders option before and it wouldn't let me do anything without the recovery disks I got boot mger is missing or a error that said use windows installation disk to repair computer but my problem was I never had windows on the new hard drive so im not sure if im doing something wrong

Theoretically "any" PC ought to be OK for a download and burn... But it won't hurt to try another PC...

What errors are you getting when you try to download?

Johnw proffered the digitalriver (mentioned within a link in riider's post here) and another source for ISO downloads: have a look-see here...

With regard to earlier attempts to repair/recover... The recovery routine will "only" work with the original hard drive. That has (usually) a recovery partition installed (and which is hidden). Change the/swap the hard drive, or reformat it "fully" and you have no such partition... However HP and most other vendors will usually provide a replacement CD/DVD set to allow you to rebuild your system with a new drive. This replacement CD/DVD does (ought) not require the hidden partition - at least when first used...

Have you contacted HP directly, and explained that you have had to replace the original HD, and now need a suitable disk set to re-instll/rebuild your OS etc.? From what I have read variously they (most manufacturers) will usually provide it either "free" or for a cost of mailing at least? Similarly they may provide an ISO download to the same end?

Have read of section 7 at the least... and it does refer to replacement disks being available; particularly with regard to SSD devices as they don't have a hidden/recovery partition... And logically those disks will (ought to) work a new "conventional" hard drive...

As trvlr pointed out, a recovery CD is meaningless as as you no longer have the original HDD with the relevant partition on it.
The only easily achievable route is to obtain a copy of Win7.

So you tried and failed... What error messages are you getting? It's just a download, albeit a huge one (3+GB !!). I hope you aren't on dial up.

Try another browser. I used Firefox.

As a test I just carried out a partial download of W7 64-bit Home Premium from the site I linked to... No problems.
I downloaded 32 and 64-bit version from there earlier this week.

You should be able to download it via your HP Pavilion laptop. You can burn the ISO image straight to a DVD using the same PC.

is the actual HP section regarding those missing recovery disks... I think it will tell you al you need to know re' obtaining them from HP. Scroll down aways to the relevant area...

I note the above link refers to mailing them to USA/Canada; but presumably they are available for mail out to UK and elsewhere...?

And as suggested a little earlier... it might also be useful to contact HP directly and explain your dilemma - new/replacement HD and thus no recovery partition (much as with an SSD); so need suitable/correct disks to enable a rebuild etc...

Done a litte more trawling (on a train and time to kill...)

At the above link select your OS as 64bit; and you end up here:

Scroll down a little to "order recovery media..." and go on from there...

Your model HP doesn't appear on the UK support site; which inclines me to think you maybe inUSA/Canada - as that HP support site does show your model...; and the links above are from the HP USA support...
