Are you talking about a Windows Password or a Boot password?

For the boot password, you would need to call Dell. They can, after verifying you legally own the laptop, help you bypass the boot password.

For a Windows Password, most of the time on Windows XP you are not logging in as "administrator" but as some other account like your name. You can try logging in as Administrator with no password and see if that works. If you have the welcome screen enabled, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL twice to bypass it.

For Windows Vista and Windows 7 the "administrator" account is disabled by default.

You can also try typing your password with the caps lock on, maybe it was on when you set your password.

Might also try to plug in an external keyboard and try your password. It might be that your built in keys are not working.

If this is about a BIOS password, you will need to clear NVRAM to reset it. If it is a Windows password, download Ophcrack.
