Need a file transfer program.

July 27, 2010 at 13:38:26
Specs: Windows 7
I need a program that i can have running on my computer and be able to download files that i choose from another computer. I have a pretty big project file that i need to get to some other people for critiquing. Some people live half way across the world so i am hoping i can get i program that i can leave running on my computer while i sleep but allow them to download it to their computer.
This needs to be a direct download to their computer, so i does not go through a server or any of that. But i would also really like but is not required, a program that has features so i can allow certain users to download files.

An FTP server/client setup would probably be the way to go. The server in this case doesn't mean you need a separate computer acting as a server but the software.. Do a Google search on FTP software. The FTP server software can be setup with different permissions for different users that would let you choose which files or folders the users can get to.

you could also try a program called ACFile Server - http://www.aclogic.com/

thank you for the response. How would i set up an ftp server so that others can access from around the world? and this acfile server, how safe is it and does it transfer them directly to the targeted computer?
and i googled aclogic and it came up with www.aclogic.com and
aclogic.com

what one should i do? the second one looks nicer.

I'll give you more detailed information tomorrow, right now I'm on my iPhone and it's not as easy as working on a full blown computer

FTP transfers are pretty safe, it goes directly from the computer running the server software to the computer running the FTP client software. No third party anything is involved. Most browsers (Internet Explorer, firefox, etc.) can access FTP servers bit for better control you can use a dedicated FTP client such as Bulletproof FTP or Cute FTP. Do a Google search for those two and have a look at their websites. They can provide you with way more info than I could post here. As far as the actual FTP server software goes, I used to use the Bulletproof FTP server. It was very easy to setup and very secure. It was a straight computer to computer transfer.

Oh, and just for clarification, Bulletproof makes both the client and server software. I really like their products.
