My laptop screen is blank and the disk drive runs continuous

November 11, 2013 at 09:06:02
Specs: Windows 7, unsure
Laptop powers up, but the screen is blank and the disk drive runs continuously. The caps key and the pause key flashes, also. I am completely uneducated regarding laptop repair. If a lengthy process will be required, I will be unable to fix it. Thanks!

Do you ever see anything at all on the screen? If not then it is almost certainly a hardware failure so you might prefer to hand it in for repair.

I doubt this will help but at least it's easy to try:
Disconnect the computer from the domestic power supply. Remove the main laptop battery. Hold the power off/on button in for about 20 seconds. Put it back together - it has been known to fix hang-ups but this time the symptoms don't really fit.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

The manual for your computer should explain the meaning of the
flashing keyboard indicators. If you don't have a printed manual,
you should be able to find it online. Just search for the make and
model number of your computer and the word "manual". It will
most likely be near the back of the book, but could be anywhere.

Something else, do you have another desktop unit you can use the monitor on? Most laptops have an external monitor plug, so plug the external monitor into your laptop and then try powering up the laptop and see if you get a picture on the other screen. Easy to do.

To err is human but to really screw things up, you need a computer!

Here is another idea. I don't do motherboard repairs in my shop, they are too time consuming so I send them out. There is a shop on e-bay which is an actual repair shop in Minnesota:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/29093212315...
Looks like the best price around and the owner is rated at 100% and has a quick turn around. May be something to look into if the motherboard is the problem. I have used them a few times and service was great...just thought I'd pass that on. The cheapest way to send out a laptop is USPS Priority Parcel Post....depending on the size of the laptop, you can use a prepaid box, MUCH cheaper than regular parcel post, fedex or other courier and it is a guaranteed 3 day delivery with tracking. My last laptop I sent out was a widescreen so the total cost for sending it out was $16.85US

It sounds to me like a motherboard problem, but I could be wrong....good luck

Susan,

When you said the caps lock and pause keys flash, I assumed
that you meant they flash repeatedly or continuously, since it was
right after you said the disk drive runs continuously. If they only
flash once, that would be normal and doesn't help diagnose the
problem except that it shows the keyboard is getting power and
is being reset.

XpUser,

Looks like that laptop and motherboard repair shop is in
Dearborn Michigan, not in Minnesota.
