Have you successfully burned CDR media before?

If so, and nothing has changed since then, I would suspect the CDRs are defective or incompatible for some reason.

Does the drive still read previously burned CDRs?

How old is your laptop?

What is the model?

Try another brand of cd, if it still fails to burn you may have a faulty burner. The fact that it's a new laptop does not rule out a faulty drive.
I purchased a new SATA burner earlier in the week and when I installed it, it failed to recognise any dvd, but was able to read cd's. Fortunatly it was a local shop and they replaced it no questions asked.
