It is a desktop built by my son. It ran well until yesterday. I did tap the f8 button, but what then? I entered the repair my computer mode and the blue screen came back again.

post is the bios information, usually white text that tells you what is happening, then it loads windows and starts up the OS.you obviously have that if you can get too F8 and repair mode.
do it again and try safe mode and try the fix in the link on the ealrier comment,
also try last known good config
then try to do a system restore
all from the f8 options.
if they fail.
i would check every connection inside the computer make sure they are all tight and sound. remove all but 1 memory stick. try each memory 1 at a time.
take off all peripherals, so you only have a mouse and keyboard connected.
