Sounds like your power supply is about to go out from overheating. When it does it may take your motherboard and other hardware with it. Be sure the power supply fan/s is/are working first.

Then you could try blowing out your entire case, including the power supply (blow from both ends) using canned or compressed air. his is messy so you may want to take it outside to do that.

I would also encourage you to ensure that you have copied off the system - now - all your personal files (the stuff you really wouldn't wish to lose). Just in-case the system goes really belly-up and you find you're unable to access files etc. should there be a need to rebuild the OS/apps installation.

Copy to dvd and verfiy the copies are accessible; then keep safe - just in-case...

Overheating may be due to fan failure; possibly poor circulation (which OtH is alluding to). Or it may actually be component failure within the psu itself... I'd be inclined to source a replacement - sooner than later; as once a psu has been "cooked" a few times, it is very likely to give up the ghost not too far off...

Be aware too that if the psu has silicon diodes in it - they were once very evident in many a psu - if they cook, they will fail but also deliver wrong volts in the process... And if the smell resmbles something like rotten fish... it's a fair bet they are cooking and will fail. Also silicon diodes can emit silicon dioxide vapour when cooked... And it's considered toxic and not wise to breath in (even in small does) in an enclosed space; can make some feel a "little unwell"... to say the least.

(edited to correct a couple of misytypes/spelink mystakes…)
