Try 'Save As' and see if it gives you a choice on the file type to save it as. If you save it there as Word, but you show Word Pad as the icon, right click on one off these files, select 'open with' and select Word and check off the box that asks if you would like to always use this program to open this type of file. Somehow this may have gotten changed and your default for opening .doc files became word pad instead of word so the icon will show the wrong program even if the file type is right. Similarly, if you install another word processing program and make it the default for this file type, it's icon will show up instead of the original one (mine shows as OpenOffice Writer).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Then when you go to save a file use the File at the upper left corner and choose save as. You should have the chose to save in a number of file extensions. Choose either .doc or .docx. If you share files with users of older versions of Office then save in .doc.
