Specs: Windows 7
I want to use my dual layer dvd burner in my xp desktop to burn movie files from my win 7 laptop

You don't really need a crossover but if you have it fine.

Basic steps are each computer has to be in same subnet ip and no gateway address. I tend to use 10.10.10.1 and 10.10.10.2 and any 255.255.255.0.
Disable firewalls in this case or add in exceptions.
Then see help and support on how to make shared folder or shared drive. See the doc's on the windows 7 as there are some weird tricks.like setting to home group. And there is a security key.

Home group does not work with Xp, you have to make the workgroup names the same on both PC's. If you have a router for your internet connection sharing you can transfer the files directly once you establish a network between them and the router will deal with the addressing.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
