According to Microsoft, "Microsoft Silverlight is a powerful tool for creating and delivering rich Internet applications and media experiences on the Web. Silverlight 5 builds on the foundation of Silverlight 4 for building business applications and premium media experiences. Silverlight 5 introduces more than 40 new features, including dramatic video quality and performance improvements as well as features that improve developer productivity."

Silverlight is available as a Microsoft Update and is not usually preinstalled on computers sold with Windows 7. Depending on your automatic update settings, Silverlight may be installed along with other recommended updates. Internet Explorer considers Silverlight an add-on which you may disable if it is causing problems with Internet Explorer, but should generally be left enabled if you want to take advantage of the latest multimedia and interactive websites.
