Solved Many Windows 7 IE11 Favorites Links won't open

System manufacturer / System name

Specs: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, Intel I7 2760QM 16Gb RAM
I'm using Internet Explorer 11 and Windows 7 Pro. Recently, many of my selections in the Favorites drop-down menu either don't open at all and just 'hang' - or they open onto a blank page which indicates it's trying to go to whatever website I've selected but never does. Links produced when putting a subject into Google also appear troublesome and frequently won't open. I've tried temporarily disabling IE11 add-ons and all the usual tricks without success and just wondered if someone might be kind enough to offer some advice Pete

✔ Best Answer
Run these two freebies in the order given:

AdwCleaner:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
(blue Download button near top - not anything else on the page).
Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run the program. Use the "Scan" button, followed by the "Cleaning" button.

Junkware Removal Tool (JRT)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
(blue Download button near top - not anything else on the page).
Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run JRT. It might appear to have stopped at times or flash the screen but sit tight until it has finished.

The above are focussed on browser malware. If they find anything please copy/paste the logs on here.

EDIT:
Also let us know if you get the same issues with an alternative browser, such as Firefox.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Sorry for the delay, Derek. Just ran the two utilities. Nothing found. I also have Malwarebytes premium (paid-for) on my PC and ran that prior to posting here. Much the same on FireFox, by the way. I must have done something to cause it - but I honestly can't think what. Did a System Restore back to 20th July but the result is much the same. Very kind of you to offer help. Pete

Do you notice general slowness on the internet? Try a speed test website that is fairly near you.

Have a look in Device Manager to see if any errors are showing.

Yes, Mike - they do. Subjects I select off Google, for example. Not all, however. I've also noticed that my Prefetch folder doesn't seem to be populating properly and has a lock on the Windows folder (although perhaps that's normal. I can't really remember) - Pete

No Derek. Nothing in the Device Manager. As regards the broadband connection (BT) the upload speed could be better at 14.77Mb/sec but the download speed is 75.81Mb/sec. Ping latency is 25.38 MilliSecs

Those speeds look fine.

It is possible that the internet or your server are playing up. In this happens things usually start to improve within a few days. It might be worth asking BT because they are usually well on top of this sort of thing. They can also do line checks.

It is difficult to imagine that pre-fetch would cause this issue. It stores information in order to speed program startups. Worth having but in practice the improvement is not huge.
